In portrait photography, there are often many unknown laws, once mastered, photography may be able to achieve twice the result with half the effort! Today, let's reveal the three elements of portrait photography.
The use of Morandi's high-grade gray in portrait photography. This scene is believed to have been seen in many places. It is a net mangrove tree at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province. It has a sense of vicissitudes and desolation. I prepared a red Chinese dress in order to distinguish people from background. The overall tone is cold tone in the late tone. Snow mountain and grassland adopt low saturation. The Chinese costume slice with low saturation in cold tone gives a kind of desolate and barren feeling. The color of the picture is mainly composed of these three colors. The color of the sky and snow mountain is a little gray blue, the clothes are not red, a little scarlet, and the grass is a little gray yellow. Students who have studied art should know the concept of advanced grey.
"Advanced gray in gouache refers to a color system or group of colors. After blending, the purity of color is usually low, which gives people a sense of harmony, rather than a single color. Because the key to the use of color is collocation, no color exists independently.
Advanced gray and soft, calm, steady, harmonious, unified, not strong, not dazzling, no conflict, the elements contained in color are complex rather than simple. This is a color that exists in real life. Even though this photo has more colors than the previous one, it still looks very harmonious and unified. Lotus leaf cadmium green, gray light green clothes, boat milk brown, the picture is rich in color, but at the same time can be integrated into the whole picture in harmony and unity.
The color of the sea is hazy blue, the color of clothes is milky white, and the color of skin and trees is milky brown.
Figure 1. Tripartite composition is the most common and basic composition method in portrait photography. Divide the picture into four or nine small grids with four lines. Put the subject in one of the intersections or a line, and the picture will be more vigorous. This picture was taken in Shaxi ancient town, Yunnan Province, using the principle of three-part line composition, people and horses in the three-part line, the picture color is rich but not messy, harmonious integration. Because all the pictures are Morandi's advanced gray system, which counteracts each other and is compatible with each other. This one uses the golden spiral composition, which is commonly referred to as the golden section.
Golden Section means dividing the whole into two parts. The ratio of the larger part to the whole is equal to the ratio of the smaller part to the larger part. The ratio is about 0.618. This ratio is recognized as the most aesthetic proportion, so it is called the golden section. This is the golden spiral of the horizontal composition. The lotus leaf at the lower left plays a role of foreground illusion. The focus is on the human face. The combination of virtual and real makes the picture more spatial.
2. Foreground visualization This picture uses golden spiral and foreground visualization composition, adding tree trunk to make the picture have a better sense of space, make up for the left space, balance the picture. Visualization of the foreground is widely used in photographing flower-related themes, reflecting the sense of space while also photographing the dreamlike foreground. Photography and art are the same. We should use the principle of combining reality with fiction. All backgrounds and environments serve the theme. We must remember that we can't compete with others. 3. Composition of Perspective Extension Line
Perspective is widely used in fine arts, mainly the following definitions.
1. Near big far small.
2. Near wide and far narrow.
3. Near reality far empty. The following works are all taken with 35MM. Wide-angle lens can bring more obvious perspective effect, highlight the sense of line and space extension.
Using Different Light Points to Take Portraits
Using light articles
God said that photography should have light. The light positions in portrait photography can be roughly divided into five categories on the map.
1. Differentiation between direct and scattering of natural light
The types of light can be divided into artificial light and natural light. As you know, electric lamps and flash lamps belong to artificial light sources, and the most familiar natural light sources are undoubtedly the sun. Although the natural light source is only the sun, from the point of view of light propagation, it emits light and then has direct and scattering.
Direct light is the light directly emitted by the light source. The sun is undoubtedly a large direct light source in nature. During the day, the position of the sun is constantly changing, so the direction and color temperature of direct light are also changing.
Direct light is hard light, so when shooting in a scene dominated by direct light, the object will have a clear outline of the shadow. You must have heard that don't go out to take pictures at noon, not because people take pictures, but because the direct light is very strong, the pictures are not soft, especially portrait photography, sharp and clear shadows destroy the face value.
(2) Scattered light
Scattered light is the process of light propagation, which is affected by particles smaller than the wavelength of incident light. Light waves radiate around these particles and scatter around them. Scattered light is also called soft light.
Because the scattered light is soft, the outline of the object is not prominent, and the excessive softness can cover up the rough surface of the object.
So when is the best time to take a picture in a day?
Generally speaking, avoid the time of 12 - 3 noon, the rest of the time is more suitable for outdoor shooting. Of course, the best time to shoot is the "golden time" of the day.
The so-called golden time refers to about an hour after sunrise and before sunset.
The angle of sunshine in golden time decreases, and it will not be projected vertically above the characters, and the sunshine in the evening is gentle relative to the noon sunshine, thus avoiding the formation of strong shadows on the characters'faces.
Unless it is to shoot strong contrast between light and shade, silhouette and other stylized works, in addition, they try to choose the golden time for creative shooting. The light quality is softer, and the warm sunset and the skin color of the characters are more matched.
2. Optical Bit Resolution
Smooth light, also known as positive light, the main light source is in front of the subject. Photography difficulty coefficient is small, colorful, smooth, the subject is uniformly illuminated, the shadows of the scenery are covered by itself, the tone is gentle, can conceal the surface of the object concave and convex and folds, but improper treatment will be relatively flat. Personally, when I take photos, a group of photos will not take too many smoothly, because the whole smoothly photographs are uniformly illuminated, can not open the sense of space, a group of photos are all smoothly, then it will appear a bit monotonous.
Front side light
Light is located in the 45 degree direction in front of the characters, which is the most commonly used main light position in the studio. The characters under the front light are full of vitality and stereo sense. It is usually used as the main light. The front light is the main light for the effect of shooting. The picture light is relatively large and the stereo sense is strong. The effect of light and shadow in composition is obvious, and the tone is partial. In the above photo, the sun shines on the model's face from the left front. Compared with the smooth light, the model's face is more stereoscopic and also front light. No matter what light position, it should be taken when the light is very soft. The shooting time is 5.30 p.m.
One obvious feature of the front side light is that the shadow is next to the person.
That is, the light source is 90 degrees on the side of the person. The difference between the front light and the front light is not particularly large because the sun is shining from the right, the model's face and clothes will be brighter on the right, the left and right sides of the contrast with shadow tone, the picture is more stereoscopic.
The side backlight is illuminated by the main light source from the left or right rear of the model. Side backlighting has a distinct feature, the outline of the characters will form a circle of Phnom Penh, known as contour light. The sun is illuminated from the left rear of the model. The forehead and nose bridge form a contour light which can make the photograph have a strong atmosphere. The best time to shoot the side backlight and backlight is 1.5 hours before the sunset. Because of the low-altitude haze in the city, even if the weather is good during the day, when the sun is fast setting. The sun would go into the clouds and haze, and it would be impossible to shoot.
Backlight is a condition in which the subject is just between the light source and the camera, which easily causes insufficient exposure of the subject. That is to say, the light source is in the front and back of people, so in order to avoid inadequate exposure, when shooting back light, as far as possible when the sun is very low and fast setting.
The shooting time and light position of the silhouette are the same as that of the backlight, only the exposure of the day is guaranteed when shooting, so that the exposure of the characters is dimmed, and only the exposure of the day is considered when measuring light.
On cloudy days, clouds in the sky are equivalent to a huge flexible mask, which changes the direct light of the sun into scattered light. From the analysis of the photos, it is impossible to distinguish the obvious location of the main light source.
Cloudy days are suitable for all-weather shooting. The shooting difficulty is low. The disadvantage is that there is no change in light and shadow.
This tutorial mainly talks about portrait photography from the angle of color matching and composition using light. I don't know if you get it.
