"The gods of Chinese painting, not only vividly but also vividly convey a realm, a kind of poetic flavor, a kind of light loneliness and a kind of tranquil sadness."
This excerpt from Mr. Zhu Liangzhi's Quyuan Feng Lotus is a highly summary of Chinese artistic aesthetics. Often when we appreciate a painting or photographic work, we can't help commenting on it: "Wow, it's interesting" and "it's sensible". In fact, the word "feeling" is a kind of profound artistic conception in line with Chinese aesthetics. What is "artistic conception"? Today, I'm going to talk about the word "artistic conception" in combination with some photographic insights. In Chinese traditional aesthetics, poetry and painting are the same. Poetry is invisible painting, painting is tangible poetry! For example, for plum blossoms, "distant knowledge is not snow, for the sake of dark fragrance", the realm of many paintings is to show the fragrance of flowers. A good plum blossom picture seems to be able to smell the fragrance of plum blossoms, and this fragrance is a subtle expression, rather than a fragrant taste, which is the relationship between poetry and painting. So we say that artistic conception is interlinked in poetry and painting. Another important aspect is that Chinese painting emphasizes personalization. Painting not only reflects the form of things, but also reflects the mind and mood. If I have a single-minded bright moon, the picture will be pure and spiritual; if I have indifferent minds, the picture will be empty and ghostly. Next, I will talk about my personal thoughts from several latitudes.
What does aroma have to do with aesthetics? Artistic conception is a personified existence, similar to the synaesthesia in rhetoric. The beauty of the picture is not the ordinary beauty, but represents the beauty of some good character. This is an important point of artistic conception. For photography, to shoot an object, such as plum blossom, we should first understand the personality significance of plum blossom in Chinese aesthetics. The purpose of shooting, including composition, lighting, color and later period, should focus on this personality meaning, such as expressing the loneliness of plum blossom, selecting single plum blossom in composition, and showing the stubbornness of plum blossom in shape.
The aesthetic appreciation of Chinese art is based on Taoist philosophy, which emphasizes the emptiness and inaction, and the quietness is the noise king. Philosophers talk about tranquility, not static tranquility, more refers to the tranquility of the mind, peace, or even no desire. For photography, how to express "quiet" more easily? On the one hand, the color composition should be as little as possible, without the need for complex colors, which is also one of the subtractions of photography. Composition leaves more space for people to imagine. The so-called tranquil and far-reaching is not far from the distance, but far from the imagination. This is a psychological concept. Finally, sometimes quiet needs movement to embellish and set off, such as "people leisurely sweet-scented osmanthus falls, night quiet spring mountain sky", sweet-scented osmanthus falls is movement, but this movement can more foil the author's expression of tranquility.
Implicit is the most characteristic of Chinese culture, we are always very euphemistic, do not like straightforward, we look at Suzhou gardens, as soon as we enter the door, or set screens, rockeries, or winding paths, in short, will not let you have a glance at all, this is the beauty of implicit. We like to see flowers in fog, we like vagueness, we like vagueness. Implicitness makes people elusive and imaginative, so as to achieve the goal of deep aesthetics. There are many ways of expressing obscurity in photography, such as foreground and background blurring, multiple exposures and so on.
4, cold and silent
Cold is cold and lonely. What we always say is "high and cold". It's too cold at high places. People in high places are very cold and people in high realms are also very lonely. In fact, the main tone of Chinese painting is also cold tone. Ink painting itself is cold tone, which is quite different from the warm tone of Western painting. For photography, the expression of artistic conception, the cold tone will always be closer to the artistic conception, of course, does not mean that all the cold color, even if there is warm color, is also for the cold color service, or foil the cold color.
Loneliness and loneliness are a little close. Life is lonely, and noble souls are always outstanding. There are many ways to express loneliness in photography, but not one way. For example, we can use less and lonely images, match minimalist compositions, or foil loneliness through noise and so on.
Emptiness is a very unique existence in Chinese aesthetics, as if Western painting does not have this concept. Talking about Taoist culture, Taoists believe that "nothing" generates all things, and "emptiness" plays a greater role than "reality". The blank space in traditional Chinese paintings is actually a kind of "emptiness". If it is empty and accessible, the spirit will come true. Empty and spirituality pays attention to the meaning and rhyme outside the painting. For photography, blank space is one of the ways to express the spirit of emptiness, as well as the emptiness and reality.
Many painters like to draw the residual lotus and dead branches, these images are related to the incomplete. The West also has the beauty of incompleteness, such as Venus'broken arm. The beauty of incompleteness is especially common in Chinese aesthetics. It may be the reincarnation of life. The beauty of the incomplete flowers lies in the strong contrast with the flowers. The purpose of incompleteness is not to be incomplete but to eulogize life, reincarnation and self-sacrifice. This is another realm.
Chinese culture is harmonious culture. The beauty of harmony can not only make readers feel balanced and comfortable, but also be a good way to express their artistic conception. The golden section point of Westerners is a kind of beauty of harmony, which is more from the harmony of the composition, the balance of the picture is the psychological harmony, and the harmony of nature and man is the soul beauty. For photography, balance plays a very important role in harmonious artistic conception.
Every Chinese literati has a back garden in his heart. Some people go back to pastoral areas, such as Tao Yuanming, some people go back to lakes, such as Fan Li's fishing grounds, and some people go back to downtown areas, such as private gardens in Suzhou. Reclusion is the last spiritual refuge and the last spiritual home. Plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum are hermits, and a flat boat is also hermits. For photography, choosing these images to represent retreat is in itself an expression of this artistic conception. The original intention of writing this article is that in recent two years, many friends have exchanged with me, saying that their photos, no matter composition, lighting and color matching, are very good, but lack of feeling. So I want to write an article about artistic conception, hoping to make a simple exposition combined with photography. My photography level is too difficult to interpret the broad and advanced aesthetics of China, so these pictures really do not match the beauty of Chinese artistic conception, but in view of copyright, I have to put up the scalp, looking forward to the follow-up to take more really interesting pictures, here we all encourage.
